Today's Book Discussion
Harry Potter & The Sorcerers Stone

I am fairly certain all of us here have already read and re-read all of the Harry Potter novels. By a show of hands how many of us were introduced to this book in 7th grade? Sooner? Later? When did you first read the book? What were your thoughts? What was your first impression? I'll tell you, I first read this book in 7th grade English. (My English teacher was pretty awesome I know.) We read the book, did a book report on it, then watched the first movie in class. Obviously the movie was already out at this point and this is when I was first introduced to Harry Potter. It was that same year that I was sorted into Slytherin house. I am now 27 years old and I still love Harry Potter and, I have read this series many times throughout the years.

As an adult reading this series, I am taken back to my teenage years when I would pretend I was on a dangerous adventure in the Hogwarts castle, or I would grab my mother's broom pretending it were a Nimbus 2001 so I could have a better broom than Harry but, of course being a Slytherin we should have the best right? I think so anyway. I mean if you work hard for it then why not? Anyway, moving on. These books as I said take me back to good times. They make me wish I were a child again and make me smile at the cheekness of their content and their sheer wit. I feel like I'm fighting the troll right there alongside Ron, Harry, and Hermione. I feel like I'm looking up to Snape as a role model because, let's face it, he is a role model! The greatest in my opinion as far as characters are concerned. What isn't to love? JK Rowlings writing is pure magic.

Does reading this book spark any memories for you? What time does it take you back to? How does it make you feel? Who do you look up to in the series as your role model? What house do you identify with and why? Have you taken the Pottermore quiz and been rightfully sorted? How do you feel about your placement if you eneded up in a different house than you thought?

Also some other things I want to ask now that we probably noticed after reading it a 2nd, 3rd, or even 8th time.

Do you feel the Durselys abuse Harry? Why or why not? What was your first impression of Malfoy? How do you feel about the way Harry handled situations such as fighting the troll, dealing with his cousin, dealing with Malfoy's bullying? How do you think Harry had to adjust going from his abusive home to Hogwarts where he lived in luxury you could say and then back home to the Pivot Dr? I want to hear your thoughts on the matter.

Okay everyone, feel free to voice anything you wish to voice and, don't forget, we are starting Strange the Dreamer on May 1st if you'd be interested in participating. Then, on May 4th, we will meet here in the common room again for a discussion on Strange the Dreamer. I will be hosting another discussion on Harry Potter & the Chamber of Secrets on May 10th.

Until next time.
